Obituary

Mrs Violet Liddington
Wendy, Pete, Dawn, Violet and families would like to thank everyone for their kind words, letters, cards and flowers that were given to us when Mum passed away at home, on the 22nd September aged 97.
We would also like to thank everyone who came to her funeral which was a lovely service.
Mum joined the Land Army in the 1940s and came to Fenny Compton from Birmingham. She met our Dad, Fred Liddington, (originally from Gaydon) and they married in 1948. They lived in Gaydon for over 45 years until they then moved to Bishops Itchington, where Dad passed away in 2006, aged 81; Mum had lived there for another 21 years. Wendy Etheridge

Gaydon Development November Update

D-Day…?
No, not that one. This month sees ‘Determination Day’ on Friday
22 November which is the deadline Stratford District Council (SDC) Planning Department have nominated by which time CEG (Malta) Ltd. are expected to provide a revised application for the proposed
Gaydon development.
This re-submission should respond to (answer/resolve?) the 28 points and issues of concern raised by ourselves and summarised by the SDC Planning Department (12-page document submitted to CEG (Malta) Ltd. and referred to in my December 2023 Update).
So, a very significant month indeed for us in terms of Gaydon villagers’ challenge to this development…!
First of all, a reassurance regarding sight of CEG(Malta) Ltd.
re-submission: the Planning Department will not just post it on the application (23/01054/OUT). All of us - 200+ villagers and concerned organisations - will be directly contacted by SDC to produce a ‘round of consultations’ during which we will be able to see how far - or not! - CEG (Malta) Ltd. have properly responded to the multiple concerns the development has raised.
Secondly, the Planning Department will not expect the re-submission to take a partial, fragmented response to the concerns raised which are then answered by trickling out a stream of responses over the coming months.
It is useful to be aware of SDC’s attitude and position, generally, to this development. It has been defined and regarded as a ‘windfall’ development as opposed to an ‘allocated’ development.
Basically, this means that a ‘windfall’ development is ‘speculative’: a means to make money for the company involved in contrast to SDC allocating part of the district as an area of need for housing or commercial development, which can then be fulfilled by a commercial company building there.
It doesn’t automatically mean that SDC is against the development, but it does set the bar higher in terms of the value and need for this development at all, in this area, at this time.
Talking of money being made (at a time of the year associated with vampires and the like!) Severn Trent announced that they are paying £3.4 million bonus to their CEO at a time when they are culpable of innumerable transgressions involving water, drainage and sewage in recent years. Oh, and they are already seeking eye-watering increases in the amount we’ll be paying them in the future.
How is this specifically to do with the proposed development? As I have related in previous ‘Updates’, the particular elevated nature of the site, towering above the village, means that the whole issue of drainage and run-off has a massive prominence at a time when financially compromised water companies will not be in a hurry to deter the flood risk for a relatively small community.
I’ve been assured by the Planning Department, that CEG (Malta) Ltd would not be allowed to finance and remedy the drainage needs of the village generally, which Severn Trent is unable to fulfil, as a means of making their development appear more attractive to the village.
November could be an interesting month regarding the development. Hopefully, it won’t be an example of the ancient Chinese curse:
“May you live in interesting times…” Tony Hughes

Nature Notes for October

Although we are still experiencing mild temperatures in Gaydon, there
has been a sudden leaf-fall and vivid Autumnal colours. The Field Maples and Spindle trees are bright red at present and the fierce winds have stripped many larger trees of their leaves altogether. The large tree in my garden is now shedding showers of Walnuts, encouraged by two Grey Squirrels which have arrived recently to share in the feast.
A flock of Goldfinches make rippling calls in the upper branches, warming themselves in the late sunshine. The hardy Red Admiral butterflies are feeding on the ivy flowers, along with late Wasps and bees. I noticed two Magpies feeding on the Honeysuckle berries in my front garden in a furtive fashion. The local Jackdaws dislike them because they are competition for food, so often mob them.
Nearby Lighthorne has had Nuthatches on their feeders and sadly an Otter has been, yet again, a road casualty. In Stratford, there has been a photograph of another Otter ignoring the tourists and crossing Waterside. They are definitely on the increase around this area and there will be some fish in the Avon for them, maybe. The local ones probably come from Kingston Pools or Chadshunt lake. They can certainly cover considerable distances at night using the flooded ditches; and so will eat a wide variety of prey such as frogs, worms and mice. Some of us remember the Otters on the Banbury road a few years ago, caught on a wildlife camera; but their pond is now drained by a new-build.
It will soon be time to renew bird feeders: mine are already attracting a couple of regulars. Bernard Price

Gaydon Village Store

November is definitely the month for pumpkins and squash and you may have noticed that we have had pumpkins in the shop for sale recently - so now what can we do with all these orange beauties?
A favourite soup recipe will help use up all your leftovers and your Village Shop is full of ingredients to help you cook your family the most nutritious of home-cooked foods.

Seasonal Recipe: Pumpkin Soup

Ingredients
2 tbs olive oil 2 onions, finely chopped
150ml double cream 700ml vegetable stock or chicken stock
1kg pumpkin or squash (try kabocha), peeled, deseeded and chopped into chunks.
For the croutons:
2 tbs olive oil 4 slices wholemeal seeded bread, crusts removed
handful pumpkin seeds
Method
Heat 2 tbsp olive oil in a large saucepan and gently cook onions for 5 mins, until soft but not coloured.
Add the pumpkin to the pan and carry on cooking for 8-10 mins, stirring occasionally until it starts to soften and turn golden.
Pour the stock into the pan and season with salt and pepper. Bring to the boil, then simmer for 10 mins until the squash is very soft.
Pour the cream into the pan, bring back to the boil, then purée with a hand-blender. For an extra-velvety consistency you can pour the soup through a fine sieve.
To make the croutons: heat 2 tbsp olive oil in a frying pan and fry the bread until it starts to become crisp. Add a handful of pumpkin seeds to the pan, then cook for a few mins more until they are toasted.
Reheat the soup if needed, taste for seasoning, then serve scattered with croutons and seeds. Serves 6.

Shipston Home Nursing

A message from Andrew Revell, Executive Director:
'It has been a busy first quarter of our new financial year. We have an average of 50 patients on our caseload at any one time, with varying levels of intervention, from four visits daily to perhaps one visit monthly.
Our aim is always to be supportive and available to both the patient and their family carers without being intrusive.
'An ongoing challenge we face is reaching out to people in need of our services who either do not know of us or who are understandably reluctant to contact us. If you know of anybody in this situation, please do connect them with us.'
